In the 18th century, in Beaminster, in the county of Dorset, the Hine family, who had lived there since 1550, experienced an incredible fate. Mr. Hine senior, a great cognac lover, decided to send Thomas, one of his eleven children, to France to learn French and the art of cognac production.
Sixteen-year-old Thomas landed in Nantes, France, in 1791. He went to Bordeaux, where he stayed for some time, and then to Jarnac, a small town in southwest France near Cognac, where the merchant who produced his father's favorite cognac had been based since 1763. There he was hired as a clerk.
Bernard Thomas Hine is the current representative of the Hine family. He has remained faithful to the Hine tradition and revived scientifically certified vintage Cognacs, thus continuing the work of his predecessors.
The HINE house is located on the banks of the Charente River in the heart of the Cognac region. The cellars, where the precious vintages are kept under lock and key, have changed little in 250 years. The journey of HINE cognacs around the world once began from the nearby quays. This house is one of the oldest in Jarnac, a town in the Charente region.
In 1920, Georges HINE created Antique, a complex and fiery cognac. Ninety years later, HINE is reinterpreting this fascinating and timeless classic.
