The history of sugarcane, its cultivation and its distillation in Guyana is a fascinating journey through time. Before the arrival of Europeans, much of Guyana was dominated by the waters of the Atlantic. It was only in the 17th century that the Dutch, with their advanced polder technology, began to reclaim the land, making it suitable for cultivation. It was thanks to the Dutch that sugarcane made its entry into Guyana at the end of the same century, with its first plantation on the banks of the Demerara River, from which the famous cultivar takes its name.
Sugarcane adapted perfectly to this new environment and benefited greatly from the nutrients that the land had to offer, after being "ripped" from the ocean. However, it was with the arrival of the English that the real magic began to happen. The English, known for their passion for rum, began to practice distilling the liquor from this precious raw material. From that moment, the history of sugarcane in Guyana became inextricably linked to the history of Demerara Distillers, the renowned producer of the famous El Dorado Rum.
El Dorado 21 Year Old Rum is a true gem in the world of rum. This extraordinary spirit is aged for at least 21 years in ex-bourbon barrels, resulting in a blend of rums distilled with care and mastery. This blend includes rums from the wooden Coffey Stills, which once belonged to the historic Enmore distilleries, rums distilled in the Coffey Stills of the prestigious Diamond distillery and rums distilled in the Savalle Still of the renowned Uitvlugt distillery.
The smooth and velvety finish of El Dorado 21 Year Old is the result of the distillation process in the Savalle Still of French origin. In addition, the rum also features fascinating cognac-like notes, which come from the Versailles Single Wooden Pot Still. These different blends combine to create a finish rich in nutty and smoky nuances.
This rum is therefore complex and rich, giving an elegant dryness in the finish that leaves a lasting impression.
TASTE: Soft, velvety, rich in tropical fruits, coffee, leather and an extraordinarily delicious toffee.
REFINEMENT: in ex-Bourbon American oak barrels
